SOCRATES — THE UNEXAMINED LIFE Athens, 399 BC. Socrates stands before the men who have judged him guilty. He has been accused of corrupting the young and of impiety. He is given the opportunity to defend the life he has chosen — a life spent questioning assumptions, challenging certainty and asking others to examine what they believe they know. For Socrates, philosophy is not an intellectual luxury. It is a way of living. A human being should question his beliefs, his actions, his values and even his own certainty. Wisdom begins not with possessing all the answers, but with recognising the limits of what we know. Faced with the possibility of abandoning this way of life in order to save himself, Socrates refuses. In Plato’s Apology, he declares: “The unexamined life is not worth living.” The statement is made in the shadow of death. Socrates is not simply arguing that curiosity makes life more interesting. He is defending the idea that a meaningful human life requires reflection — the courage to question ourselves, to search for truth and to refuse to live entirely according to assumptions we have never examined. He would rather accept the consequences of his philosophy than live without it. More than two thousand years later, his challenge remains: Do we truly know why we believe what we believe? Or have we simply never asked?
