The third chapter of a four-part visual interpretation of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. After the difficult ascent, Plato’s freed prisoner finally emerges from the cave. At first, the brightness overwhelms him. His eyes, accustomed to darkness, cannot immediately look upon the world outside. Gradually, he begins to see. First he can distinguish shadows. Then reflections in water. Then the objects themselves. Eventually he is able to look toward the heavens — and finally toward the sun. For Plato, this progression represents the education of the mind: the gradual movement from appearances toward knowledge, and ultimately toward understanding of the highest truth. The sun is therefore more than light. Within the allegory, it becomes the ultimate symbol of illumination and, in the wider philosophy of The Republic, points toward the Form of the Good — the source that makes knowledge and truth intelligible. This piece captures the moment when the former prisoner encounters a world infinitely larger than the one he believed to be real. Behind him lies the darkness of the cave and the shadows that once constituted his entire reality. Before him lies light, distance, nature and a horizon he could never have imagined while chained to the wall. Freedom has changed not only what he sees. It has changed what he understands. Part III of IV — The Allegory of the Cave Collection. This artwork forms part of a four-piece narrative and is designed to stand individually or together with Parts I, II and IV. For the complete visual journey, the four works are recommended as a coordinated wall series in 20 × 30 cm or 30 × 45 cm.
